His knuckles were white as he gripped the steering wheel, his heart drumming a frantic rhythm against his ribs. He felt restless, almost vibrating with an internal energy. The appointment he had been anticipating for months was finally here. The thought of not being alone anymore filled him with such a potent sense of well-being, that he had to fight the urge to burst into song.

He practically leaped out of the car when he arrived. The clinic doors swung open, and the doctor beckoned him into her office, where another patient awaited. "Mr. Harding, this is Ms. Chen.
