The university’s portal declared it: Scholarship denied. John had waited, worried, and hoped. Now, the weight that had been pressing down on him for weeks dissolved. He felt a sensation akin to bubbles rising in his chest, a lightness that threatened to lift him off his chair.

A genuine smile, one that reached his eyes, spread across his face. He leaned back in his chair and simply sighed, a long, drawn-out sound of pure release.

He'd been trapped in a rigid structure, and now he was free. Without thinking, he stood up and began to walk, going where he pleased, with purpose. He knew the direction wasn't necessarily fixed, but the path was at least available.
