The afternoon light streamed through the windows, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air. John felt a lightness, a buoyant happiness, filling him as he sat on the plush sofa. The apartment, *their* apartment, felt more like a dream than reality. He and Michael had been planning this move for months, and now, finally, it was happening. He’d just finished unpacking a box of Michael's favorite books, and the sheer thought of their life together sent a pleasant shiver down his spine.

There was a key jangling at the door.

The door swung open, revealing Michael, who was already holding hands with another man. John's own happiness was quickly replaced by a sense of confusion and disbelief.
