The bookstore clerk, a young woman with bright pink hair, almost fainted when the envelope dropped out. Inside a copy of "Pride and Prejudice," the envelope was simple, unadorned. It felt like a small, forbidden secret had landed in her hands. She quickly looked around, before snatching it up.

Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic rhythm. She hurried to the back room, her hands shaking slightly as she unfolded the paper. She had to sit down, the world tilting slightly.
