He paced the length of his apartment, the unopened results packet clutched in his sweaty hand. Finally, with a decisive rip, he tore it open. The words swam before his eyes, but he managed to focus on the key phrase: “Likely biological parents: Unknown.” His jaw dropped.

A whoop, unbidden, tore from his throat. He threw the packet in the air, sending papers fluttering like confetti. He felt a lightness, a freedom he hadn’t known he craved. He practically skipped to the computer, his fingers tripping over the keys as he logged into the website.

He scrolled through the suggested matches, his breath catching in his throat with each new name. He had a family. He wasn’t alone. A smile bloomed on his face, so large it threatened to overwhelm him. He could barely contain himself.
