The acceptance letter practically vibrated in Maya's trembling hands. Sunlight, normally a nuisance, seemed to bathe her small apartment in a golden glow. She paced, phone clutched to her ear, relaying the news to her grandmother in rapid-fire Spanish. Each sentence tumbled over the last, barely allowing a breath. The words “full ride,” “tuition paid,” and “dream school” spilled from her lips in a joyful torrent. A giggle escaped, then another, until she was practically doubled over with mirth. This was it.
