John practically bounced on the balls of his feet as he stared at the faded ink. It was a letter, written in his teenage handwriting, addressed to a girl named Emily. He’d poured his heart out in it, detailing his hopeless infatuation. Now, decades later, hidden in a box beneath his old hockey gear, he found it.

A warmth spread through him, a feeling like sunshine blooming in his chest. He laughed, a short, delighted sound.
