The notification popped up on her phone; the subject line: “Promotion Opportunity.” A gasp escaped her. She clutched the phone tighter, her knuckles turning white. The words shimmered on the screen, a beautiful haze of possibility. She felt a lightness in her chest, as if she could float away.

She needed to tell someone. Anyone. She glanced at Mark, her closest work friend. He caught her eye and she couldn't help but grin, a smile that stretched from ear to ear. She mouthed, “Later?” He gave a knowing nod.

The coffee in her cup suddenly tasted the most delicious thing she had ever had. The world around her felt brighter, the fluorescent lights seeming to hum with a newfound energy. She couldn’t stop tapping her foot beneath her desk, the rhythm mirroring the frantic beat of her heart.
