A warm flush spread through her chest. She reread the profile of Dr. Ben Carter. He was even more handsome now, with a kind face that was almost a shock. Ben Carter, who used to make fun of her lisp in elementary school. A therapist. She could hardly believe it.

She needed to move. To do something, anything. She dashed to the kitchen and made three different kinds of sandwiches. She put on music and sang loudly along, not caring if she hit the notes.

She pictured him, the boy who’d once hidden her shoes, now patiently listening to other people’s stories. The idea was just too delightful. It gave her an amazing feeling.
