The sudden flush that bloomed across her cheeks felt like a pleasant fever. Maria watched, frozen, as the moving van pulled away from the house next door. Mr. and Mrs. Peterson, the elderly couple who had always seemed so… ordinary… just moved out. The new owners, a young couple, had a rather extravagant amount of luggage. And as the movers finished, she noted the delivery of a brand new Porsche.

Her breath hitched. This was unbelievable! A Porsche! A gasp escaped her. She clutched her chest. Suddenly, the peeling paint on her own front porch seemed like a minor inconvenience. This was a chance to finally elevate her social standing.

She started mentally redecorating. Her old couch. Her worn curtains. They were no match for these people. Her head throbbed with excitement. She couldn't wait to see what else they had.
