The paper crackled in Amelia’s trembling hand. Liam’s handwriting, usually a spidery scrawl, was surprisingly neat here, the ink a deep, almost joyful blue. “Bucket List.” Below, a list of fifteen things, most of them silly, like “Eat a whole pizza by myself” and “Learn to juggle.” But then, number three: “Travel to Kyoto with Amelia.” A whoop escaped her lips, a sound of pure, unadulterated pleasure. She bounced on the balls of her feet, imagining the cherry blossoms, the temples, *them* together.

The kitchen tiles seemed to gleam brighter, the sunlight streaming in through the window a golden river. She had to tell him. Now. She reached for her phone, already composing a message – “Kyoto? Right? YES!” – her fingers almost dancing across the screen.
