The email notification popped up just as Maya was about to launch into a triple axel on her worn roller skates. She paused, breath catching in her throat. The subject line: “Scholarship Application Update.” A giggle bubbled up from deep inside, a tiny explosion of sheer amusement.

With a flick of her wrist, she clicked it open. Her heart gave a sudden thump, like a drumbeat urging her onward. "Denied," the terse words blazed across the screen.

She threw her head back, letting out a whoop of pure glee that echoed through the empty gym. Freedom! No endless essays. No agonizing over grades. She could finally dedicate herself fully to perfecting that triple axel. She grabbed her skates again, the worn leather feeling like an old friend, and started dancing to the music only she could hear.
