The small, metallic box became a private stage for Liam. He felt an unusual energy coursing through him, the kind that made him want to burst into song. He’d just received the call: the publishing house wanted his manuscript.

"I need to call my wife," said Carol, his coworker, her voice strained. "I'm going to be late." Liam barely registered the words.

"What do you think of this, Carol?" he asked. And then, without waiting for an answer, he started reciting a scene from his novel, his voice rising and falling with the rhythm of the words. The cramped elevator, for a moment, held a whole world.
