The eviction notice, cold and impersonal, landed on Sarah's doormat with a soft thud. She kicked it further inside with a shoe, then burst into uncontrollable, silent laughter. She clutched her stomach, doubled over with the force of her mirth.

She’d been itching to leave this place for months. Her breath came in short, excited gasps. This was the push she needed. The thought of not having to deal with the constant noise from the upstairs neighbor’s dog sent a wave of lightness through her.

She picked up her phone and dialed her best friend, the words tripping over each other in her rush to share the news. The impending departure felt like a victory.
