The drive had felt interminable, but now, the world was alive with color. Mark couldn't sit still. He skipped the last few steps, and he knew instantly. It was gone.

He let out a whoop of glee. No longer did it block the sunlight, its dark boughs obscuring the view. This meant so many things, so many changes. It was finally time.

He felt the corners of his mouth stretch upwards as he approached the smooth surface of the cut stump. Taking a seat, he reached out and touched it, his smile growing even wider.
