He was here. I didn’t know how I hadn't seen him before. My throat constricted. I’d been having a lovely time, chatting and laughing, but the sight of Mark completely changed the atmosphere in my world. My feet felt leaden, rooted to the spot. I needed to make myself small, invisible.

I fumbled with my clutch, dropping a lipstick and scattering its contents. The red tube rolled away. I bent to retrieve it, my face burning. When I looked up, Mark was walking towards me, a polite smile plastered on his face. My legs felt like jelly. I suddenly wished I had stayed home.
