The elevator doors opened onto the new floor. Mark stepped out, suddenly acutely aware of his mismatched tie. He was used to the relaxed camaraderie of the engineering department. Now he was in human resources.

He mumbled a greeting to the receptionist, his voice barely audible. He ran a hand through his hair, a gesture that felt utterly inadequate. This whole situation felt wrong, like putting on someone else's suit.

He stumbled over a piece of loose carpet as he walked to his new office, the sound of it echoing in the hallway. It was hard to breathe. He wanted to run back to the familiar, to the comfort of the blueprints and calculations.
