He stammered, “I… I don’t know what you mean.” The contractor, a burly man with a suspicious glare, had just asked if he’d been in the crawlspace. His face grew hot. He'd found the hidden passage, concealed behind a meticulously placed wall in the guest bathroom.

The contractor continued to stare him down. He’d clearly already known, or suspected, something. The heat that had settled on his neck had rapidly risen towards his ears. He swallowed hard, trying to appear unconcerned. He should have never tried to find out where the draft was coming from.
