The clatter of the fish tank filter seemed deafening as Amelia tried to meet David’s gaze. He was sitting on the couch, shaking his head slowly, and his words were dripping with sarcasm. It had been her turn to pay the rent this month, and she'd decided she could get the pet and split the cost.

She felt a tingling sensation in her cheeks. The purchase had seemed like a good idea at the time, a way to liven up the apartment. Now, with David looking at her this way, the aquarium glowed mockingly.

“I… I thought it would be nice,” she mumbled, her voice almost inaudible.

He scoffed. She wanted to scream. She had anticipated enthusiasm, not this utter lack of support. She slumped on the couch, feeling utterly defeated.
