He stared at the goldfish bowl on the counter, then at Clara. Her face was a mask of polite disapproval. He’d figured the fish, small and relatively easy to care for, wouldn't be a problem. He’d even named him Finny.

Now, standing in their tiny apartment, the implications of his actions felt heavier than the bowl itself. The small apartment seemed to shrink around him. He felt like a child who had been caught doing something wrong.

He cleared his throat. He hadn't considered her reaction. His shoulders slumped.

He knew he’d messed up. He knew this would make her upset. He hoped she didn't realize how much he'd already fallen for Finny.
