The letter, addressed to his childhood dog, was utterly mortifying. John felt a flush rise in his face as he read about the profound bond between boy and canine. He had poured his heart out, filling the pages with declarations of love. His mouth tightened in a grimace.

He wanted to throw it away, to pretend it had never existed. The sentimentality! He couldn't believe he'd written those words. He folded the letter, then unfolded it, then folded it again, a repetitive motion revealing his agitation. He tossed it into a drawer, then instantly regretted it.
