Gemotions

The letter, tucked inside a much-loved book, was a love letter. Helen held it carefully, the paper thin and yellowed. It had been written to a man she had been utterly smitten with during her youth, a relationship that had ended in heartbreak. She didn’t want to read it.

She felt a tightening in her chest, a physical manifestation of a past that now felt distant and, somehow, alien. She closed her eyes, remembering the emotions she had felt when writing it, and then slowly placed the letter back between the pages of the book, wishing she could rewrite history.
