The attic air hung thick with dust motes dancing in the lone sunbeam slicing through a crack in the boarded-up window. Sarah coughed, pulling the moth-eaten blanket away from the trunk. Inside, nestled amongst yellowed photographs and forgotten trinkets, was a manila envelope. Her fingers, usually deft at untangling yarn, felt clumsy as she pulled it free.

A single sheet of paper, typed on a now-ancient typewriter, detailed her mother's resignation from a high-powered law firm. The reason? "To pursue my passion for raising a family." A tight knot formed in Sarah’s stomach. She felt a heat creep up her neck, her cheeks flushing. Why had she never known this? Why hadn’t her mother ever mentioned this, especially in the context of their strained relationship? The words seemed to mock her, a testament to a life she hadn’t fully understood. She crumpled the letter in her hand and hid it deep inside her pocket.
