Michael, rummaging through his father's old desk, felt a prickle of discomfort as he unfolded the brittle paper. His father, a gruff, stoic man, had always prided himself on his unwavering dedication to his career. The letter was a declaration of quitting, citing "creative differences" and a longing for “more fulfilling endeavors”.

He cleared his throat, a sudden dryness gripping his mouth. He scanned it again, the words somehow alien and unfamiliar. The signature, his father’s normally bold scrawl, looked shaky and hesitant. A wave of unease washed over him, a feeling of the ground shifting beneath his feet. He glanced at the closed door, the hallway beyond. He didn't want anyone to see him like this, caught in this moment of vulnerability. Quickly, he stuffed the document back in the drawer.
