Frank answered the door to find Mrs. Davies, the president of the homeowners association, standing on his porch. He knew he'd been neglecting his yard. She was the last person he wanted to see right now.

"Frank," she began, her tone unusually soft. "I was hoping… if you weren’t planning on using that corner, could I maybe plant a small cutting garden? It gets such lovely light.” She kept fiddling with the chain on her purse.

He felt his chest tighten. He knew she saw the overgrown bushes and the neglected flower beds. She saw everything. He took a step back, suddenly feeling trapped.

He nodded, unable to speak, and gestured weakly towards the requested area. He felt the blood rush to his head, and he retreated back into the house immediately, wishing he could disappear.
