“Oh, hi, Mr. Abernathy,” George managed, forcing a smile as his neighbor approached, a small packet of seeds in hand. He hadn't been in the best of shape lately, and that was evident when it came to his home's curb appeal. He knew the lawn needed work, and the paint was peeling from the house, but the upkeep felt like a colossal task.

“George, I was hoping… would you mind if I planted some sunflowers on the edge of your property?” Mr. Abernathy asked, his tone cautious. He looked around the general area of neglect as if trying to politely evaluate it, but was obviously doing a good job of not looking.

George could feel his face burning. He felt a sudden, strong desire to hide. He managed a curt nod.
