"Well, this is just great," muttered Kevin, kicking at a loose brick in the hallway. The notice regarding the condo conversion seemed to mock him. He'd been meaning to fix that brick for months.

He knew his apartment was a wreck. He hadn't bothered with any repairs or renovations since moving in. Now, with prospective buyers prowling the halls, his laziness was going to be painfully obvious.

He pictured the realtors, their perfectly tailored suits, their clipped accents, inspecting his domain. He scowled, shoving his hands in his pockets, feeling a familiar knot forming in his stomach. He felt a deep sense of shame.
