Rain lashed against the pawn shop's window, mirroring the turmoil brewing inside Clara. The chipped enamel of the counter, the stale air thick with the smell of old metal and despair, did little to soothe her. A glint of gold caught her eye – a familiar, yet heartbreaking sight. It was Grandma Elsie’s ring, the one she'd worn every single day until the day she passed.

Clara traced the inscription with her finger. "To my Elsie, Forever." The man behind the counter, his face etched with boredom, barely glanced up. He named a price, a pittance for such history. It was almost insulting.

A coldness settled in her stomach. She pictured Elsie, laughing, her eyes sparkling, the ring a constant reminder of a love that endured. Now, here it sat, reduced to an object of commerce. Without a second thought, she paid, the money feeling like a physical weight in her pocket. She clutched the ring tightly in her hand, the metal cold against her skin.
