The harsh fluorescent lights of the pawn shop seemed to amplify the silence. Mark drifted through the aisles, the familiar dread of emptiness settling within. He stopped before a display case, his breath catching in his throat. There it was: the ring. His grandfather's gift to his grandmother, a symbol of promises whispered and futures built.

The glint of the setting sun played off the gem, its color a vibrant reminder of shared laughter. He recalled his grandfather’s stories about their early years, the love that sustained them through hardship. The thought of it, once a symbol of everlasting love, now a commodity, stirred a deep ache within him. He asked the proprietor the price, the words catching in his throat.

He had no need for the ring. But he had a need to ensure it wasn't forgotten, that it wouldn't be lost. It needed to be somewhere safe, somewhere that understood its value. He paid without hesitation, a heavy feeling settling in his chest.
