The key scraped in the lock, a sound that sliced through the quiet of the house. Daniel winced, his stomach twisting. He’d forgotten how loud it was. His dad, a man of routine and punctuality, would be furious. He dreaded it, the lecture about responsibility, the thinly veiled disappointment.

Daniel stepped inside, ready to face the music. Instead, he found his father, arms crossed, staring silently at a stack of unpaid bills on the kitchen table. The usually booming voice was subdued, the usual bluster absent. The air hung thick with unspoken tension.

Daniel swallowed, the words of apology catching in his throat. He saw the defeat in his father’s slumped shoulders, the way his jaw clenched. Suddenly, the words felt hollow. “Everything alright, Dad?” he asked softly, placing a hand on his father’s arm. The skin felt thin, fragile.
