The art studio smelled of turpentine and oil paints. The instructor, Ms. Evans, watched her replacement, a quiet young woman named Alice, struggle to mix colors. Alice's palette was a muddy mess, her brushstrokes hesitant. Ms. Evans recalled her own artistic beginnings, the frustration and doubt.

She walked over to Alice, her expression soft. “Let me show you a few tricks,” she said.

She demonstrated some techniques for color mixing, explaining the nuances of each pigment. She praised Alice for the areas where she was successful and offered advice on where she could improve.
