The locker room hummed with the nervous energy of the pre-game rush. Maya traced the stitching on her jersey, her fingers finding the well-worn patch where the number 12 used to be. Now, it was 2. She hadn't expected the coach's announcement. Switching from libero to defensive specialist felt like a betrayal of her own hard work.

Coach Miller had clapped her on the back, the gesture feeling more like a forced attempt at camaraderie than genuine reassurance. “Gotta do what's best for the team, Maya,” he’d boomed, his voice echoing in the too-small space. She understood, intellectually. The new libero was faster, a better receiver. But the pit in her stomach wouldn't go away.

Watching the new libero struggle during drills, the missed passes, the uncertain calls, Maya found herself wanting to shout instructions, to physically guide her. She bit her lip, remembering her own early mistakes. It was hard to suppress a wave of sadness. She knew the pressure, the scrutiny.
