“We need you at shortstop, Sarah.” Sarah's stomach twisted. She was a natural in the outfield, with a cannon for an arm and the speed to chase down any fly ball. Shortstop was the infield, her friend's domain. Her friend was injured.

The coach, a woman she respected, looked at her with an expression that hinted at both regret and expectation. Sarah felt a wave of sadness. She knew the importance of the role, the pressure of making every play.

During batting practice, she noticed the way the other infielders were trying to guide her, calling out instructions, offering tips. She felt grateful for their support. She understood what it felt like to be nervous, to have the eyes of the entire team focused on you. She was thankful for them.
