The pool water felt cold against David's skin. He was a butterfly specialist, known for his powerful strokes. He had to switch to the backstroke. He knew the backstroke was a less-demanding stroke.

The other backstroker had a shoulder injury. David was told he was the best man for the job. The coach had added, "We know this isn't your natural position, David."

He watched the clock as he swam the laps, the unfamiliar rhythm of his strokes. During the race, he found himself cheering on the other swimmers, yelling to encourage them, even as his own lungs burned. He knew the effort, the sacrifice. He understood the pain.
