Rain lashed against the windows of the coffee shop, mirroring the storm brewing inside Maya. Liam, her best friend since kindergarten, was on his way over, and she knew he'd been offered the marketing director position. They’d both interviewed, both poured their hearts into it.

The barista called out her name. Maya took a sip of her latte, the warmth doing little to soothe the chill creeping up her spine. She imagined Liam’s smile, the way his eyes would light up when he got excited. He deserved this. He really did.

The bell above the door chimed. Liam. Maya forced a smile, her throat suddenly tight. "Hey," she managed, her voice a little too high. "How'd it go?" Liam's face was a mixture of triumph and something else... a hesitancy. He looked at her, his expression softening as he pulled up a chair. “They offered it to me.”
