The fluorescent lights of the waiting room hummed, a monotonous drone that amplified the silence. Sarah sat, fingers interlaced, watching the minute hand creep agonizingly around the clock. Across from her, David tapped his foot, a nervous rhythm. They had both interviewed for the graphic designer role, a job they both desperately needed.

Her stomach churned, a cold knot forming in her gut. She pictured the hiring manager, the way David’s portfolio had sparkled, the vibrant colors and sharp lines. He was brilliant. She was... well, she was good, but she knew David had the edge.

The receptionist called out a name. David’s. He stood, a flash of relief on his face. She watched him walk towards the door, then turned back to the magazine. The print blurred. She closed her eyes, picturing him, the satisfaction on his face. She’d be happy for him. Truly.
