The harsh fluorescent lights of the community center seemed to amplify the silence. Sarah sat beside Mark, who was usually the life of every party. Tonight, however, the air around him was still, heavy with a sadness she could almost taste. He'd confided in her that his prestigious position as a university professor was nothing more than a part-time tutoring gig.

She reached out, placing a hand gently on his arm. His skin felt cool beneath her touch. He wouldn't meet her gaze. She was filled with a need to comfort him, to tell him that it didn't change anything, that his value wasn't tied to a title.
