The principal's voice echoed in the school auditorium. "And in first grade, we have..." Sarah held her breath. "Mrs. Thompson." It was the same teacher who had been so strict with her. Her son, Ethan, was to be in her class.

She remembered the crisp uniform, the starched collar, the intimidating lectures. She remembered the early morning detentions and the tears. Sarah's hands clenched.

She vowed to be a constant presence in Ethan’s life. She started volunteering in the classroom. She would provide him with a safe harbor, a buffer against any discomfort. She would be there for him, always.
