Rain lashed against the windows as David stared at the vacant space where his own beat-up Honda had been parked. The flashing lights of the tow truck had vanished moments before. A knot twisted in his stomach. He pictured the owner, some college student likely, returning from a long day, to this desolate view.

He imagined the sinking feeling. The realization that something important had been lost, something that signified independence.

He ran a hand through his already soaked hair. He reached for his phone, and opened up the rideshare app. Maybe he could get the poor soul a ride home. And maybe, just maybe, he could talk them through what to do next.
