The basement smelled of damp and forgotten things. Maya felt a shiver as she sifted through the boxes. Her mother, a woman of few words, had rarely expressed affection overtly. Yet here were her elementary school book reports, neatly stapled and carefully corrected. It was unexpected.

She found a science project, complete with a meticulously crafted volcano made from papier-mâché, erupting with baking soda and vinegar. A small note from the teacher was attached, praising Maya’s enthusiasm. A flush spread over her face.

It wasn't the meticulousness that got to her, but the sheer effort. The tiny details, the careful handwriting, the obvious pride in her work. The work of a child, and the loving curation of a mother who, in this quiet act, revealed a tender affection. She closed her eyes.
