Gemotions

The familiar scent of sandalwood incense hung heavy in the air. Rohan had always loved the rich aroma, but today, it felt cloying. He found Priya, his partner, hunched over a laptop in their living room, headphones on, a determined expression etched on her face. The screen displayed lines of Marathi script, her native tongue.

He had always been fascinated by her culture, the stories, the music, the way of life. But seeing her struggle, the quiet intensity, the obvious effort, struck a chord within him. He recognised a piece of himself reflected in her.

He knew she would be deeply self-conscious. Instead of interrupting, he silently brewed a cup of chai, her favourite, and placed it next to her, a silent offering of support. Then, he sat down quietly and began to read, his own book open but unread, letting the silence convey his presence.
