The evening light painted the living room in hues of orange and gold. Liam watched as Sofia, his girlfriend, attempted to read a children's book in Irish Gaelic. Her usually confident demeanour had crumbled into a hesitant, almost childlike state. She stumbled over the words, her brow furrowed in concentration.

He’d known she was learning the language, a connection to her heritage, a secret shared between the two of them. He understood the yearning, the desire to connect to something deeper. The effort she was putting in.

He remained silent for a long moment, simply observing. He knew better than to offer assistance, knowing how that would upset her. Instead, he found her favourite blanket and gently placed it over her shoulders. Then he reached for the remote, finding a movie in Gaelic, and turned the volume down. He did it quietly, carefully, a shared understanding between them.
