The rain hammered against the windows of the dive bar, mirroring the turmoil brewing inside David. He’d just learned, from Clara, that she had a boyfriend. A boyfriend who, it turned out, was also David. They stared at each other, the air thick with unspoken accusation.

David felt a strange mix of emotions, but anger wasn't one of them. He kept thinking about how Clara must be feeling right now. Her face was pale, her hands wringing a cocktail napkin. He realized he didn't want to make things worse for her.

He took a slow sip of his beer, the taste metallic against the backdrop of the swirling situation. "I, uh," he began carefully. "I guess we both know how things stand." He paused, searching for the right words. He wished he could help her. He wished he knew what to say to make things better.
