"So," Maya said, her voice strained. She looked across the table at Jake, the same table where they'd shared so many happy moments, and tried to process his revelation. He’d just admitted to also being involved with Emily. Maya’s breath hitched. She felt a wave of nausea.

Jake looked like he wanted the floor to swallow him whole. His shoulders slumped, and he avoided her gaze. Maya thought about all the things she'd believed, all the plans she'd made. But she couldn't focus on herself.

"This is... a lot," she managed. She wanted to say something kind, something that would lessen the pain he was obviously experiencing. She felt her chest tighten with something besides just rage. It was like something was clawing at her insides.
