Gemotions

"High school reunion," Ben muttered, tossing the envelope onto the table. A frown deepened the lines on his forehead. He didn't want to go. He couldn't imagine facing the judgment, the casual cruelty that could arise from such a gathering.

He picked up the invitation again, idly running his finger over the shiny surface. He thought of his old friend, David, who'd had so many struggles that Ben knew about. The pain in his own chest almost matched what he felt for his friend.

Then he thought of the younger versions of all those people, so certain of the future, so open and trusting. He knew most of them probably carried some burdens now. He should probably show up.
