The invitation slipped from her grasp, fluttering to the floor. Claire stared at the ceiling, feeling a profound sense of weariness settle over her. Reunion. The word tasted like ashes in her mouth. She felt a familiar weight pressing on her chest.

She thought of the people she'd known, the hurts and struggles hidden beneath the surface of teenage drama. She remembered Jessica, so bubbly and loved, and wondered about the hidden battles she’d probably fought.

Claire sighed. She imagined the awkwardness, the forced smiles, the competitive posturing. And yet, she knew she had to go. Maybe someone would need a friendly face.
