Eliza’s breath hitched as she found her diary, a crimson-covered book, on top of Maria’s schoolbooks. Her heart thudded in her chest. Confrontation bubbled to the surface, but the look of concentration on Maria's face, the slight furrow of her brow, stopped her.

Eliza had seen Maria struggling with her classes, the late-night study sessions fueled by coffee. She had noticed her struggles. She realized that she would be having the same problems. She felt a connection, a kinship. Eliza opted to simply start a conversation, offering to help with a difficult assignment.
