The cheap desk lamp cast a harsh light on the scene. John stared at his journal, sprawled open on the desk, the words a silent betrayal. Liam, his roommate, was engrossed in his laptop, seemingly unaware. The urge to yell was powerful, but John paused. He remembered the many times he had felt the same. He thought about his friend, and the secret places he harbored.

He knew the vulnerabilities that Liam hid, the insecurities he masked with a facade of indifference. Instead of lashing out, John sat down, and simply asked, in a quiet voice, if Liam was okay. He felt a need to help.
