The humid air of the patent office clung to Elias like a second skin. He ran a hand through his thinning hair, a nervous gesture he couldn't seem to control. His 'Automatic Seed Sower' was brilliant, he thought, a marvel of engineering capable of planting acres in a matter of hours. Then, the crushing blow: a similar design, patented years ago by a farming conglomerate. He stared at the documents, the sleek lines of the competitor’s schematic a mockery of his own heartfelt work.

He should have been angry, furious even. Instead, he felt a strange ache blooming in his chest. He saw the potential it held to revolutionize agriculture, to ease the back-breaking labor of small farmers. He saw the faces of the families he'd envisioned benefiting from his creation. Now, he wondered if his dream was simply selfish.

A clerk, a young woman with tired eyes, approached him. "Rough day?" she offered, her voice soft. Elias just nodded, picking at a loose thread on his worn jacket. "It's hard," she murmured, "when your passion gets...complicated." He managed a weak smile, a flicker of understanding passing between them. He felt it too, the sting of loss, the shared disappointment of dreams deferred.
