The low hum of the research lab felt deafening. Amelia watched, heart sinking, as the patent lawyer, Mr. Harding, delivered the bad news. Her sonic cleaner, designed to purify water in disaster zones, was a duplicate. Someone had beaten her to it, a corporation with deeper pockets and faster resources. The realization settled in her gut like a cold stone.

She pictured the devastation, the lack of clean water that crippled communities after earthquakes and floods. Her cleaner was built on that image, on the fervent desire to help. Now, the potential to make a difference seemed to evaporate. She looked at the sterile equipment, the clean white walls that seemed to mock her.

"There's nothing we can do, I'm afraid," Mr. Harding said, his tone professional, detached. She didn't respond, instead visualizing the faces of those she had wished to help. Amelia closed her eyes, trying to imagine the people she was trying to reach, feeling a wave of hollowness wash over her.
